I went to Epicentre Church for 13 years, and although I have grown and made many friends there, unfortunately, I ended up being treated very unfairly and had to leave. If I could give negative stars, I would because many deeply wounded me there. They used to be better when they were smaller, but as the pastor set his sights on megachurch, they became less and less personal, and less and less caring. Pastor John is so obsessed with missions and church planting it’s like he’s determined to hit a lofty number or something. For years he’s intentionally failed to honor his word to me about getting a cross displayed on the stage. Even when I called him out on it. That’s a continual lie in my book. To this day, for some perverse reason, a standard cross fixture is something Epicentre and PIHOP find completely repulsive. I didn't appreciate the double ambush you guys pulled on me with positive notes then dropping negative issues on me. For two years Paul Graf treated me the absolute worse; taking a month to reply to each email at a time, rejecting all my suggestions, forcing me to give my all to him, refusing to assign me accountability on confessional sin, failing to follow up with me, offering absolutely no help to me whatsoever, twisting and falsely accusing me of things that are totally inaccurate. Paul Graf is a horrendous human being. After expressing all my grievances, I wouldn’t receive a single apology outside the “I’m sorry you feel that way” non-apology. If I got angry over being treated like dirt, I’d be treated like there was something wrong with me. I'll tell you what's wrong; when leaders fail and nobody holds them accountable or responsible for their mistakes. When I pleaded with them to forgive me, they would not clear my debt.

When I didn’t fully jive with their contemporary culture; one leader told me numerous times I should leave. I told another I was struggling with my faith and he adamantly refused my desire to reciprocate prayer. Another friend defended prayer refusal, a snub I find offensive for any Christian to reject. After suffering years of poor treatment and negligence, for me the last straw was being falsely characterized after denied ability to serve in the lowest capacity; and I have a heart for serving. Despite how damaging this was to me, absurdly this was described as neither punitive nor discipline. They refused to acknowledge the punitive effects this has on a person and totally failed to follow up. To be misjudged, mistreated, and devalued by leaders from this church is to suffer the morals of men who play the place of God. Churches are supposed to glorify God, not refuse His cross. Churches are supposed to offer help to people, not turn them down and away. Christian leaders are supposed to be servants, not self-saving superiors. In my experience, these people are more interested in keeping a cheery status quo than truly walking along side or dealing with those who struggle with sin and sufferings. I have sin in my life, but I also have God. Unlike Jesus, Epicentre has no welcoming heart for the love and goodness that even a sinner can offer.

If you’ve read this far and all you picked up is anger, attacks, and your only response is fear, dismissal, disgust, without acknowledging the wrongs I’ve experienced, my pains, my hurts, my sadness, you are way more broken than I am. You can run to your blind cheery bubble. I do want to say that not everybody there is this atrociously awful; I can count a number of compassionate reactions I've gotten on, say, one hand... In a way, I do feel bad if my words have indirectly hurt their families. But who then, feels bad for the wounds which they have inflicted upon me? Whenever somebody says "this church wronged and hurt me", and the majority response is neither sympathetic nor sad, nor epiphany, nor rectification, but a countering freak out irony barrage of "we love this church!", you know you better get the heck outta there and stay as far away as possible. I wasn't even saying "don't go there" before but now... that is messed up. I’m glad to be gone.

  • I have only been part of Epicentre Church for two years but I have to say that in my 30+ years of being a Christian, this is the healthiest and most helpful church to my own personal growth and well-being. My husband and I LOVE Pastor John and all the leaders of this church. Do they have their flaws? Of course, we all do. There is no such thing as a perfect church. But God spoke very clearly to my spirit that this is where I belonged and He did the same for my husband. Together, we are growing with other hungry believers wanting MORE of a fresh touch and move of the Holy Spirit. If you are feeling dry and empty in your spiritual walk and wanting new encounters with God, with fellow believers, and also with those outside of the church who have yet to know Christ (this church is BIG on evangelism and misisons which I love), then you owe it to yourself to check out Epicentre Church in Pasadena. Don't just take my word for it. Don't just read other reviews here and believe one side of the story. Prayerfully seek if this is a church God wants you to try and come and visit us! I am so glad my husband and I did!

  • I've been attending Epicentre since September and I'm so grateful for this community. For this being a larger church, it means so much to me to have such a personable pastor to intentionally welcome and introduce himself to new guests. I gladly bring friends and family here because I know it's a safe, nurturing and life giving church.

  • i absolutely love this church. being someone who has been to many churches, i feel like ive been to a good amount of a variety of churches. no church is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. that is something that is not just prevalent at one church, but ALL churches. thats why we need Jesus, right? ive been to this church for a few years now, and though ive been away at school out of state, im always really missing my community, sermons, and all the other great things Epicentre has to offer. Pastor John and the staff have been so unnecessarily good to me -reaching out and being so personally invested when i had so many difficult situations going on despite how busy they all are. I find Pastor Johns sermons so God centered and filled with so much Godly wisdom that I always listen to his sermons when Im away at school(thats how much i miss epicentre lol). The small group i attend has also been such a blessing to me, and i miss them all the time when im at school. They really have softened my heart towards the misconceptions i once had toward community. they and i are not perfect, but by grace, love, and forgiveness, we are all learning how to have healthier and Godlier relationships with one another. anyway i could go on and on about how much i love this church, but i really think you should check it out if you are church hopping!!

  • Awesome church. Powerful worship, great teaching, and a real sense of God's presence. Even more, the church has humble leadership, value for community, and a desire to practically love their city and engage global need.
